as suggested by juggernaut, i have prepared sets of images taken on the same subject under controlled lighting (to my best). I have taken the shots with same settings on both camera:
- Shot with Aperture Priority (F-10 is used),
- Exposure Compensation: -0.7 step
- AutoWB,
- Picture Mode: 'Natural',
- Color Space: sRGB
- Tripod used, no flash is fired.
- Shot in RAW + SHQ.
- Manual Focus at the same spot (tried hard. manual focusing on E-500 is tough),
- ISO samples: 100, 400, 800, 1600.

p/s: while writing this, i realized that i have mistakenly set the E-330 ISO BOOST to "ON+NF" while for E-500 is "ON".

Sample #1: ISO100.

Sample #2: ISO400.

Below is 100% cropped for ISO400

Sample #3: ISO800.

Below is 100% cropped for ISO800

Sample #4: ISO1600.

I realized that the AutoWB for E-500 at ISO100 is off. Don't know why. May be it's my setup.

Overall, E-330 is consitently producing very accurate color compared to the E-500. This is my take... your comments are welcome.

Thanks for viewing.

Thanks for the effort, no doubt that E330 color range is more dynamic than its predecessor.

Hi Shchow,

It's amazing how much mileage you've drawn out from the E330 in the short space of owning it. My hats are off to you :-)

This new test under controlled parameters is more objective of the capabilities of the new E330.

The image rendition between both cameras is much closer than the earlier test. It does mean that out of the box, the LiveMOS sensor renders colors very close to the Kodak FFT CCD. I'm not sure if the colour processing engine has anything to do with it but it does bring some assurance to those who're worried that a sensor technology change may rob some of the uniquely desirable attributes of the FFT CCD. More of this will need to be tested under outdoor lighting, but it's a promising start.

What is immediately obvious is the very low presence of shadow noise & that is a big step forward in opening more light constrained environments to the E330.

You point of facing a small & hard to focus viewfinder in the E500 is valid, it applies to some extend to the slightly larger & brighter E1 finder, which is why I find Mode B intriguing to solving my off-centre focusing needs.

Thanks in many ways for sharing without reservations. Your time & efforts is truly appreciated.

Cheers,

Wow.. impressive. Thanks for the effort. I suppose the if the E-500 had NF turned on, then it'll be slightly better.

Yes, I notice that the E-330 has better noise control.

i'm glad that you guys appreciate the small and not very scientific test that i've done. With my limited knowledge on digital photography, i can't really write a long article on my analysis, just hope that the images helps to give you a better idea on both e-systems.

thanks for viewing.

Pictures from the E-330 has a very much better "shadow area" noise level.

I also see pictures taken with the E-500 has some orangey tint colour. Is it because of the FFT-CCD sensor?

Thanks for sharing.
